What is Chiropractic?

Your spinal column is made up of 24 independent vertebrae allowing your body to move, twist and bend through everyday motion and activities. It also helps protect the delicate central nervous system that controls and coordinates every organ, tissue and cell of the body. No matter what age you are or profession you take up, the everyday stresses of life can have a great impact on the structure of your spine. Sitting or standing for extended periods of time, playing sport, carrying children or heavy bags, bending, lifting, using mobile phones – essentially all of life’s activities bring with them the potential for spinal misalignments, known as subluxations.

Subluxations of the spine occur when a joint or vertebrae in the spine or the extremities is restricted creating lack of motion in that area and potentially negatively impacting proper nerve communication from the brain to the body. This may result in pain and discomfort and potentially in decreased function to parts of your body.

Chiropractic provides a, natural and drug-free option to locate, correct and prevent these subluxations by providing a gentle, targeted movement where needed to improve motion of the body’s spinal column and extremities. This is commonly known as a chiropractic adjustment.

Why Chiropractic?

There are many reasons people seek Chiropractic care. Often neck and back pain can be a triggering cause along with headaches, sciatica, or even hip and joint pain. Today, however, studies are showing that chiropractic care can influence parts of the body unrelated to necks and backs, such as brain function. Studies show that a chiropractic adjustment stimulates the prefrontal cortex of the brain which is involved in behaviour, goal directed tasks, decision making, memory and attention. This means chiropractic may influence overall cognitive function and help our bodies integrate information more efficiently. In fact, according to the Australian Spinal Research Foundation, regular Chiropractic care has been shown to improve brain function by up to 20%*.

Further studies have shown that spinal manipulation can lead to an increase in proprioception, which may decrease the likelihood of falls in older adults*, a critical finding for our aging population.

Chiropractic For Kids

Being a kid can be tough work! From learning to crawl and walk, to riding a bike, the life of a child is full of opportunities to encounter subluxations. Your chiropractor can play a large role, along with your GP and other health professionals, in ensuring that your child is growing and developing properly both structurally and neurologically. Our chiropractors have been university trained on how to care for children of all ages and apply a variety of gentle techniques to suit your child’s age and level of comfort.

FAQs

How many times will I have to come?

This varies patient to patient. Your practitioner will tailor a care plan to achieve the best result for you. Like choosing to go to the gym regularly, having your teeth checked or your hair cut regularly, how often you choose to benefit from chiropractic care is always up to you.

Is Chiropractic Painful?

Our Practitioners undertake a five-year university degree and many have additional training in a variety of techniques that can be modified for the safety and comfort of their patients. In some cases patients may experience muscle soreness the next day.  It is usually mild and is not uncommon when first undergoing Chiropractic care. Drinking plenty of water, using an ice pack, going for a short walk as well as engaging in light stretching after your first visit may help ease any discomfort to promote healing.

Is Chiropractic Safe for Children?

All TLC chiropractors have been trained at a university level to treat children from newborns to early adulthood. Techniques are modified for the safety and comfort of your child in relation to evidence-based practice.

While the risk of injury during chiropractic care is very rare, our chiropractors aim to minimise that risk by performing a thorough history and examination of a child before beginning any care. All Chiropractors are trained to modify their approaches to suit the special needs of infants and young children. Our chiropractors work with your regular GP and will refer to them where necessary.

Many of the techniques used on children by the chiropractors at TLC involve massage, gentle stretching, cranial therapy and the use of a special instrument (activator) to apply a very low force manipulation of the spine in order to restore normal spinal motion. Some of our chiropractors have a special interest and post graduate training in chiropractic neuro-developmental paediatrics which focuses on incorporating specific chiropractic care with brain based activities, exercises and nutrition.

What techniques do you use?

All of our chiropractors have been trained in a variety of techniques which allows them to modify your care to what suits your comfort and preference.  Ask your chiropractor if you’d like more information on which techniques they can offer you.

Manual therapies (Gonstead and Diversified)

A range of manually applied chiropractic therapies modified to suit the age, condition and preferences of the patient, with a focus on restoring neuro-musculoskeletal function.

Drop-piece tables

The special tables utilised in our practice feature state of the art mechanical motion sections which move up and down under your body. By utilising a moving section under a particular part of the spine, the chiropractor can use only minimal pressure to restore normal glide to tight and unbalanced spinal joints. They can be used from school aged children up to the elderly.

There is a special section to these tables that moves forward allowing a pregnant woman to lie on her stomach comfortably face down.

SOT – Sacro-Occipital Technique

The use of wedge shaped blocks, and crania-sacral therapy

Activator

The Activator is a small hand held instrument which is used to gently restore the function of the spine and nervous system. It can feel somewhat like a quick finger flick against the skin.

The instrument can be used on all ages of people but is especially useful in the treatment of children and the elderly.

Chiropractic Neurology

The purpose of chiropractic neurology is to identify areas of dysfunction within the nervous system and to rehabilitate these areas using specific techniques and exercises, without the use of drugs or surgery. A chiropractic neurology assessment involves a comprehensive neurological and orthopaedic examination. Special techniques that are often used during rehabilitation include:

  • Visual and auditory based exercises
  • Electro-therapeutics and other adjunct therapies
  • Activities involving spatial awareness and changes in perceptual activity
  • Spinal and limb adjustments
  • Spinal and limb exercises
  • Specific cognitive activities
  • Behavioural modifications

I ‘crack’ my own neck - why do I need chiropractic?

You should not try to forcefully manipulate your spine. Our Chiropractors are highly trained through a five-year university degree to adjust the spine in a very specific manner, location and direction. As a result, it is virtually impossible to adjust oneself correctly and accurately.

Why do pregnant women use chiropractic?

Many pregnant women are referred for lower back or pelvic pain associated with pregnancy.  This includes localized lower back pain, sciatica (radiating leg pain), groin pain, and leg or thigh pain. Some patients present with middle back pain, rib pain, neck pain or headaches.

Is chiropractic care safe during pregnancy?

Gentle chiropractic treatment including joint mobilization, soft tissue treatment, and therapeutic exercise is safe during pregnancy. Doctors of chiropractic are trained to address the challenges of the pregnant body including loosening ligaments and increased weight and will offer special tables or pillows to accommodate your growing bump!
